We invite you to participate in the research seminar “Machine Translation and Society”.

This seminar is the outcome of an ongoing research project, focusing on machine translation uses, awareness and impact in society. Technologies offered and used on the Internet play a significant part in our everyday life; nevertheless, little research has been done on how ordinary people view and use machine translation.

PROGRAMME:

15:00-15:05 – Opening by prof. Ramunė Kasperė, dean assoc. prof. Ainius Lašas (KTU, Lithuania)

15:00-15:35 – Prof. Lucas Nunes Vieira (University of Bristol, United Kingdom“Everyday machine translation and the concept of privacy”

15:35-16:05 – Prof. Lynne Bowker (University of Ottawa, Canada)  “Machine translation literacy among non-translation students: What have we learned? Where do we go from here?”

16:05-16:30 – Prof. Ramunė Kasperė (KTU) “The societal impact of machine translation solutions”

16:30-17:00 – Round-up discussion (Moderator: prof. Vilmantė Liubinienė. Participants: prof. Lucas Nunes Vieira, prof. Lynne Bowker, prof. Yves Gambier (University of Turku, Finland), Milda Povilaitienė (BV Translations, Lithuania), prof. Ramunė Kasperė, prof. Jolita Horbačauskienė, assoc. prof.
